persephone
Persephone is the daughter of Demeter, the goddess of the harvest. Pershephone was beautiful and graceful. Demeter loved her. She was her pride and joy. Persephone could grow plants. She is associated with the change of the seasons. Her story represents the love of a mother and daughter.
Persephone loved playing with the nymphs in the meadow. Her cheerful laugh was heard by Hades. He fell in love with her, wanting her to light up the Underworld with her cheerful personality. One day when she was in the meadow with Demeter she wandered off. Hades rode up and took her down to the Underworld. She cried for Demeter but Demeter couldn't find her. Against her will Hades made Persephone the queen of the Underworld. But all Persephone wanted was to see her mom. She despised the Underworld. Persephone starved. She knew if she ate or drank anything from the Underworld she would be stuck there forever. Demeter grieved. Plants stopped growing and all animals starved. A frost covered the earth. A Titan’s daughter, Hecate, informed Demeter about Hades taking Persephone. Demeter was enraged. Eventually Zeus sent Hermes to fetch Persephone. Hades was sad that she was leaving. Persephone was overjoyed. Hades handed her a pomegranate. When Persephone saw Demeter they ran to each other. Hades held up the pomegranate. Three seeds were missing. Persephone forgot to not eat. Zeus didn’t want them to be separated forever. So once a year Persephone goes to the Underworld for three months for the three seeds. Every year Demeter grieves while Persephone is gone, but for the other 3/4 of the year everything grows. This is why winter is cold and bare.
