ATHENA
Athena is the goddess of wisdom and strategy. She values wisdom, justice, inspiration, art and courage. Athena’s sacred animal is the owl and there is a city named after her named Athens. There are many legends about Athena including the story of the first spider.
One day Athena was disguised as a human wandering in Athens and saw a woman weaving. She decided to walk over and see her work. When she made it to where the woman was weaving, she heard something say, “ Wow Arachne, Athena herself must have taught you to weave.”
“Pshh” said Arachne “That stupid goddess did nothing, I learned on my own!”
Athena was getting mad but she was wise and decided to give Arachne another chance so Athena said, “Oh, but dear, Athena invented weaving so you shouldn't anger a goddess.”
“Shut up you old hag, the stupid goddess did nothing, it was all my skill,” said Arachne.
That was the last straw for Athena, so she revealed her true godly form and yelled “ How dare you insult a goddess you measly human! I should smite you, but I have a different idea. I challenge you to a weaving duel.”
“I accept,” said Arachne.
The next day Arachne was setting up her loom and Athena came. “Do you need to borrow a loom?" Arachne said over-confidently.
“No, I brought my own” Athena snapped her fingers and a majestic golden loom appeared.
“Who will be judging?’ asked Arachne. “
I will judge,” said Athena. And then the weaving battle began. The weavers were going very fast and making a lot of progress. They weaved and weaved for hours until they were done. Athena made a tapestry of Olympus with all the gods sitting on their thrones. Arachne made a tapestry of Athens with microscopic people weaved into the art. Athena of course won the battle and then decided to punish Arachne. To do so she turned her into a spider. That is the story of why spiders can weave. The End
