Dionysus’ life started when Zeus fell in love with a woman named Seleme. Seleme was visited by Hera in disguise and told Seleme to ask Zeus to reveal his godly form to her. Zeus swore on the River Styx that he would grant her one wish so Seleme asked Zeus to reveal his true form. Zeus did not want to but he swore on the River Styx. When he revealed his true form, Seleme burst into flames, so Zeus took Dionysus his son from her womb and stitched him into his thigh. Zeus hid Dionysus with mountain Nymphs.
When Dionysus was older he went to the village and taught the mortals how to make wine. He travelled around the world making wine.
Dionysus’ ability to turn things into wine saved him many times. One day pirates mistook him for a prince. They tied him to the mast, but then the ropes turned to grape vines and the boat filled with wine. Dionysus turned into a lion and chased the pirates overboard, but as they touched the ocean they turned into dolphins, and that is why dolphins are the most human-like animals.
Another time Dionysus’ ability helped him was when he came to a kingdom where the king threw him in jail for being a “fake god.” One night, the bars of the cell turned to grapevines and Dionysus robbed every villager of their senses, just like wine robs people of their senses, and made them rip the king limb from limb.
